Top Medical Schools in China

China has gained the attention of the world of medicine due to its excellent medical facilities, scholarships and well-trained medical staff who teach in the universities. Some of the medical universities in China are recognized by WHO and are included in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Compared to other top universities in developed countries, universities in China have lower entrance requirements and the cost of living is much lower thus attracting many foreign students.

Some of the top medical schools in China with MBBS are below:

Shantou University Medical College

 

Shantou University Medical College is located in Shantou, a beautiful coastal city in the Guangdong province. Shantou University Medical College has 2 campuses. One where you spend your first few years as a medical student and a second one where clinical skills are taught. Most MBBS programs in China take 6 years but the MBBS Program at SUMC takes 5 years. The course is taught in English and it includes units that help students learn the Chinese language and culture.

Apart from medical theory, you will also get medical training at the Pearl River Delta and Hainan.

The campus at Shantou contains a simulated medical center where you get to practice your skills with the aid of virtual learning resources shared by University of Alberta and Stanford University.

The course commences in September every year. There is one intake annually and the deadline for application closes in mid-July. The requirements you need to meet for the MBBS program include:

• You must be physically and mentally healthy
• You must speak, read and write English well
• You must have a valid passport
• You must have a clean criminal record

Tuition fee per year is RMB 52,000 and RMB 260,000 for 5 years. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, you can apply for the Outstanding Foreign Student Scholarship which was set up primarily for foreign students. It is a partial scholarship.

Nanjing Medical University

The university is located in Nanjing city, one that is rich in Chinese history and culture.

Nanjing Medical University has 2 campuses, Wutai and Jiangning. The MBBS program is taught in English. Although knowing Chinese is not a requirement to enroll for the program, you must know Chinese in order to graduate. It is taught as part of the MBBS program.

The course commences in September of every year. There is only one intake per year and a total of 100 students are enrolled during each intake. The course takes 6 years to complete. It includes 5 years of study and 1 year of internship. Students can do their internship in any of the following facilities if they wish to do it in China.

• The First Affiliated Hospital of NMU
• The Second Affiliated Hospital of NMU
• Nanjing First Hospital
• Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital

The requirements for the MBBS program include:

– You must be between 18 and 25 years old
– You must be of good mental and physical health
– You must have outstanding school grades

Application for the MBBS program opens on 1st December and closes on 30th June. The application can be closed earlier if the targeted number of students is reached earlier. Feedback for the application is usually given within 4 to 6 weeks after application.

The tuition fee is RMB 34,000 per year and 204,000 for 6 years. Scholarships are available for international students. You can apply for the Jasmine Jiangsu Government Scholarship, a full scholarship offered to international students.

Zhejiang University

In Hangzhou, one of the most visited places by tourist, lies Zhejiang University. The School of Medicine offers an MBBS program that is recognized internationally. The course is taught in English so you do not have to worry about learning Chinese first. However, Chinese is taught in the first 2 years of your study as part of the program.

The MBBS program takes 6 years to complete. They include 5 years of study and 1 year of internship. As a student, you will go through 3 stages of the course which include:

• Pre-med for 1 year
• Pre-clinic for 2 years
• Clinic for 3 years
• Internship for 1 year (you will be supervised by doctors)

RMB 42,800 is the tuition fee per year, resulting to RMB 256,800 for 6 years.

You can get a scholarship for the MBBS program. The Chinese Government Scholarship is a full scholarship offered to international students who study in Hangzhou.

Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University

 

This educational facility is located in Xujiahui, a commercial district in Shanghai. The MBBS program at Shanghai Medical College is taught in English and it takes 6 years to complete just like many other MBBS programs in China.

The 6 years include 5 years of study and 1 year of internship. You can choose to do your internship in China, your home country or another country. The school will help you find a suitable hospital to do your internship.

If you choose to do your internship in China, you must pass HSK 5 before the internship so that you can communicate with patients effectively. Some hospitals affiliated with Shanghai Medical College include:

• Huadong Hospital
• Shanghai Cancer Center
• Eye and ENT hospital
• Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center

The ‘Outstanding Foreign Student Scholarship’ is available for international students in case you would like to apply for one.

The tuition fee at Fudan University is RMB 35,000 per year, amounting to RMB 210,000 for 6 years.

Guangzhou Medical University

 

The university is located in Guangzhou, one of the 3 largest cities in China. It has an amazing campus that is suitable for both teachers and students to live and work in. It offers a 6-year MBBS program taught in English. You take 5 years to learn and 1 year to do an internship in one of the university’s 8 affiliated hospitals.

The course starts in October of every year. The application deadline is 31st October. If you wish to apply for a scholarship, you have 2 options to choose from. They include:

• Chinese Government Scholarship
• Guangzhou Government Scholarship

The cost of tuition at the university is RMB 30,000 per year which amounts to RMB 180,000 for 6 years.

You need to meet the following requirements in order to qualify for the MBBS program.

• You must not be a citizen of China
• You must be of good health physically and mentally
• You must have a high school graduation

Capital Medical University

It lies in the city of Beijing, the capital of China. Beijing is known for its amazing modern architecture and bustling city life. The university has advanced equipment as well as 994 associate professors and 548 professors.

The university has a good reputation of scientific research that cover various fields including traditional Chinese medicine and basic medicine among others. It also has partnerships with universities and institutions in more than 20 countries which is a good opportunity to offer student exchange programs.

Before being enrolled into the MBBS program, you will be required to do a pre-med course which takes 1 semester to complete. It includes accommodation and tuition. There are 2 intakes for the pre-med program, in March and in June. The March program lasts up to June while the June program lasts up to August.

The MBBS program at Capital Medical University lasts for 6 years. The 6 years are broken down as follows

• 1 year of foundation
• 2 years of basic medicine
• 2 years of clinical medicine
• 1 year internship

Students can do their internship in the 14 hospitals the university is affiliated with. The program begins in September of every year. If you want to apply to this university, you should send your application by end of February which is the deadline for all applications.

Scholarships are available to international students. You can apply for the ‘Beijing Government Scholarship’ at the end of the first academic year.

The cost of tuition is RMB 35,000 per year, amounting to RMB 210,000 for 6 years. During the first year, a management fee of RMB 18,650 is required. Hence, the total fee for 6 years is 228,650.

The requirements for enrollment into the program include:

• You must be between 18 and 40 years
• You must be a high school graduate
• You must have proof you know English if you come from a country that speaks English as a second language

Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Located in Guanshan, an urban township, is Huazhong University of Science and Technology. This public research university is among those qualified to offer an English MBBS program for international students.

The program begins in September and lasts for 6 years. The 6 years of the program are split into:

• 2 years of instruction in English
• 2 years of instruction in English and Chinese
• 2 years of instruction in Chinese

One year of internship is included in the duration of the program. If you would like to do your internship in China, you will be required to pass HSK level 5. You can do your internship at:

• Tongji Affiliated Hospital which is a level A grade 3 hospital
• Union Affiliated Hospital

If you choose to apply for the MBBS program in this university, you need to do so by June 30th which is the application deadline. Entry requirements for the MBBS program include:

• You should be a high school graduate less than 25 years old
• You should not be a Chinese passport holder
• You must know how to read, write and speak English well

Tution fee per year is RMB 40,000. For 6 years, it will amount to RMB 240,000.

Jinzhou Medical University

It is located in north-eastern China in the city of Jinzhou. The MBBS program at this university takes 6 years to complete, inclusive of one year of internship. Internship is done at the First Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning Medical University (LMU).

There are 2 intakes for the program. One commencing on 15th April and another commencing on 15th October. The application deadlines for the program are 1st March and 31st July.

Cost of tuition is RMB 192,000 for 6 years. Per year, the cost is RMB 32,000.

Requirements for entry into the program include:

• You must be between 18-25 years
• You must be a high school graduate
• You should not have a criminal record
• You must be physically and mentally healthy
