The UN Environment-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development is jointly established by United Nations Environment Programme and Tongji University in 2002, has served as a strategic think-tank for UN Environment, an interdisciplinary platform for Tongji University and contributed to environment and sustainable development on three main pillars, education, research, and outreach. Up to date, IESD has provided environmental education for students from nearly 80 countries and carried out capacity-building for more than 4000 participants from developing countries through training programs and workshops. Meanwhile, in cooperation with UN Environment, China’s ministries and diversified stakeholders, IESD undertakes research projects, including the UN Environment Green Economy Report (Chinese economy); UN Environment-China-Africa Cooperation Program on Environment supported by Ministry of Science and Technology, Chongming Eco-Island Project, Green Economy Textbook, Multi-dimensional evaluation system on China’s low-carbon economy, South-South Cooperation Case Studies, etc. IESD is also home to a key lab of China Meteorological Administration of Cities’ Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change and a Key Laboratory of Chemicals Risk Management. Besides, IESD is the Secretariat for Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES) with more than 800 members all over the world.
