International Students’ Experiences at HKMU

  • Mary: Perspective of A Ukrainian Settled in Hong Kong

Originally from Ukraine, Mary’s vision for her future led her to pursue undergraduate studies at HKMU.  “I have been living in Hong Kong for a number of years, and it has become clear to me that I would like to spend the rest of my life in Hong Kong.”

When it came to choosing a university, HKMU’s glowing reputation was an important factor in her decision. More specifically, she says “I chose this university because one of my professors from my previous school recommended it, as well as …for its strong business programs.”

Her experience in the international community is significant: “It has taken me some time to get accustomed to the university system, the different buildings, and the professors.” While Mary acknowledges the challenges of adapting, she remains motivated for a successful future.  “All of us must study hard in order to achieve success,” she says.

  • Ashlyn: A Filipino’s Excellent Start to Uni

Another student at HKMU is Ashlyn, an 18-year-old from the Philippines, who is a recipient of the HKMU International Student Admission Scholarship.  She shares that her reasons for choosing HKMU is “to pursue better opportunities and quality education.”

Ashlyn expresses openness to exploring beyond borders: “As of now, I intend to stay in Hong Kong after graduating. I’d like to give it a try, explore, and broaden my understanding of the career I’d like to do.”

Joining student organizations is one of the ways she plans to get more involved with her peers.  “I recently had the opportunity to participate in a photoshoot and interview for the local media,” she acknowledges. “It was a valuable experience for me because I was able to engage with other students who are not in the same year and course as mine.”

Ashlyn’s tip for other international students is to be open to personal growth opportunities. She says: “University life can be overwhelming, seeking support and building connections with others would be a good thing to do to ease the overwhelming feeling.”
