Westlake Undergraduate Curriculum

Westlake University has three main schools where students can concentrate in 5 total majors.

Undergraduates don’t need to declare a major until the end of their second year, providing ample time to explore, and can choose from over 300 courses. As Westlake promotes interdisciplinary studies, students are encouraged to engage in research across different fields, collaborate with the world-class faculty and researchers in Westlake’s state-of-the-art laboratories, and even take graduate-level courses.

Advanced Study in Science and Engineering for Undergrads

At Westlake University, undergraduates can accelerate their learning by taking graduate-level courses, doing research alongside doctoral students, and writing a thesis as part of a senior capstone project. 

The rigorous curriculum allows ambitious students to develop advanced analytical and research skills, and gives anyone planning for future graduate study a head start.

Dormitory and Accommodation

The four-year residential college system at Westlake’s brand-new and modern Yungu Campus goes beyond housing. Undergraduates also receive academic advising, and become part of a supportive community that offers a wealth of extracurriculars and fosters close relationships with peers as well as junior and senior students.

Current students live in furnished double suites with a shared living room, balcony and bathroom. At Westlake, Chinese and international undergraduates room together in the dormitories. This arrangement fosters intercultural communication and helps international students learn about Chinese culture and practice the Chinese language, creating a unique interdisciplinary global community.

Once campus construction is fully completed in 2024, the four residential colleges at Westlake will house quiet study areas, cafes, multimedia rooms, event spaces and much more, and accommodate up to 2,200 undergraduates.

Clubs and Organizations

At Westlake, students can participate in dozens of student clubs and organizations that encompass diverse interests — from tai chi, art, calligraphy and Chinese traditional medicine to AI, media and bioinformatics – or they can even choose to start their own group.

Chinese Language Studies

All international Westlake students are required to take two or more years of Chinese language classes. Mandarin proficiency can help international students not only navigate basic life in China but also better engage with the Chinese scientific and research community. Higher fluency also opens up future internship and work opportunities at Chinese companies.

Application fee: 0

Tuition: ¥350,000 RMB/year

Accommodation: 1,800-2,200 RMB/year

Insurance: ¥800 RMB

Scholarships at Westlake University

Through the multiple scholarships available for international students, Westlake provides aid based either on merit (for students with top grades) or need (for students in financial difficulty).

Students can also secure internships on campus or at external companies or organizations to gain valuable work experience and start developing a career.

Study Abroad Requirement

All undergraduates are required to study abroad for at least one semester at one of Westlake’s 20 partner institutions located around the world, including in Australia, the US, UK, and Israel.

Study abroad exposes Westlake students to research traditions and resources at other premier institutions, and forms a cornerstone of Westlake’s educational goal that all students graduate with intercultural skills, international experiences, and a global mindset.

Westlake’s partner schools include UC Berkeley, Cornell, University of Edinburgh, University of Warwick, University of Queensland, and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Undergraduate Eligibility

To be eligible to study for a bachelor’s degree at Westlake, international students must meet the following criteria:

  • Non-Chinese citizen (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan)
  • Completed or expected to complete high school before enrolling
  • Strong interest and intellectual potential in science and engineering
  • TOEFL minimum score: 95
  • IELTS minimum score: 6.5
