The main trends are for foreign students to study degree programs (241,500 are studying degrees). China has been increasing the numbers and quality of degree programs available.

For example we have seen a large increase in students coming to study Medicine (MBBS) from India, Africa and Pakistan MBBS.

The top 3 cities for foreign students are Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, but more and more foreign students are choosing to study in second and third tier cities, for example Suzhou, Zhenjiang, Xi’an. Partly because the increasing development of Universities in those cities and the lower cost of living.

Although around 80% were self funded, there has been an increase in scholarships and particularly surrounding the one belt one road initiative

Most of the scholarships (88%) are for degree students.

One of the biggest changes I have seen in the last year is the rising demand in China for foreign talent who can speak Chinese and understand Chinese culture. As Chinese companies expand into emerging markets they need this talent.

For example at Beijing Foreign Studies Universities International Business school companies are offering foreign students scholarships for part time work.

China Campus Network is a group of 27 Universities offering scholarships to students. The first year is an intensive Chinese learning program. After studying 1 year in Chinese, foreign students can receive a full scholarship for their bachelor’s at 27 top Chinese Universities.

British Universities in China are also growing rapidly.

Xi’an-Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a joint university with Xi’an Jiaotong and Liverpool University has recently announced launching a new campus.

University of Nottingham Ningbo

Sino-British College

Nankai University has just yesterday announced scholarships for the joint degree program with Glasgow University for Master’s in Translation Studies here.
