From Kazakhstan to China’s Top University: Vladimir’s PhD Journey at USTC

In the competitive world of doctoral studies, finding the right balance between academic excellence and cultural immersion can be challenging. For Vladimir, a management innovation PhD student from Kazakhstan, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) offered the perfect blend. “USTC is currently at the forefront of technological advancement and innovation,” Vladimir explains.

Why USTC?

Vladimir’s decision wasn’t made lightly. What drew him to this particular institution was its global reputation for research excellence. The university’s strong focus on management innovation aligned perfectly with his research interests.

Beyond rankings, it was the promise of opportunity that sealed his decision. The vibrant research environment and resources available to doctoral students presented an irresistible package for an ambitious PhD candidate seeking to make his mark in management innovation.

Navigating the Application Process

For international students, applying to a Chinese university can seem daunting. Vladimir breaks down the process into manageable steps:

  1. Research programs and professors – “Identify potential supervisors specifically those who are aligned with your research interests”
  2. Prepare essential documents – Including transcripts, research proposals, and recommendation letters
  3. Contact potential supervisors – Discuss research interests and supervision possibilities
  4. Submit application through the USTC online portal
  5. Interview stage – Be prepared for faculty interviews
  6. Admission offer – Upon selection, begin preparations for relocation

Vladimir’s own experience during COVID was slightly different, requiring a video presentation before his online faculty interview. One crucial tip he emphasizes: “You need to have two recommendation letters… it’s better to be prepared for that from your professors from master degree.”

Life as a PhD Student: Challenging Yet Rewarding

The academic rigor at USTC is undeniable. “Life as a PhD student at USTC is quite challenging but still rewarding,” Vladimir reflects. His days are filled with coursework, qualification exams, and original research focused on innovation management and idea evaluation.

But it’s not all work. The campus buzzes with activity beyond the laboratory and library. “We have cultural festivals, you can visit gyms – it’s offered for free. We have like four or five gyms around the campus,” he shares. Social life thrives as well, with opportunities to meet friends at campus bars and social gatherings.

The sound of international conversations echoes through USTC’s sprawling campus, where students from around the world gather to share ideas, challenges, and moments of celebration away from their research.

Research Opportunities and Collaboration

What sets USTC apart, according to Vladimir, is the access to resources and expertise. “The really best thing here is the resources that this university provides. You’re able to communicate with very high-level professors, super smart people,” he explains with obvious appreciation.

The opportunity to publish papers and participate in conferences has been instrumental in advancing his academic career and research in innovation management.

Advice for Future PhD Applicants

For those considering following in his footsteps, Vladimir offers several practical recommendations:

1. Prepare Early and Thoroughly

“Start early, research programs and prepare your application well in advance,” Vladimir advises. A strong research proposal that aligns with departmental focus is crucial.

2. Connect with the Right Supervisor

Finding alignment between your research goals and your professor’s interests is essential. “It’s very important to pick the right professor… that your research goals align with the research interests of this professor,” he emphasizes.

3. Embrace Chinese Culture

Cultural adaptation is perhaps one of the biggest challenges for international students. “Learn about the culture of China. It’s quite specific, especially if you are coming from European countries,” Vladimir notes.

He recommends learning at least basic Chinese to ease the transition: “It’s better to know Chinese language, otherwise life is a little bit hard.”

The Rewards of Academic Adventure

Vladimir’s journey illustrates how stepping outside one’s comfort zone can lead to tremendous growth, both academically and personally. The connections formed with professors and fellow students have proven to be among his most valuable takeaways.

“Don’t be stressed,” he reassures prospective students. “Everything can be solved. Stay open-minded. China has so much to offer, and being open to new experiences will enrich your life for sure.”
