How to prepare for the International English Test-Speaking Section?

What is the International English Test?

The International English Test (IET) is an online test to evaluate international students’ English level. You can book the IET test here. The IET is made of two parts, the IET Speaking Test, and the IET Written test. Together they make the IET test.

It is officially recognised by Chinese universities and is accepted as an official evaluation of your English level. The IET test has been recognised by 100% of Chinese universities in 2020. In the case that it is not recognised we will offer you a full refund.

You can book the test within 2-7 days, the IET Speaking test only takes 15 minutes, together with the IET Written Test you will get the IET Test Certificate as below.

IET Test Sample Certificate:

An sample of the certificate you will receive is below:

The universities are able to scan the QR code and watch your test to verify your English level.

The IET Speaking Test Format

After you have booked the IET test you will receive a link to book the IET Speaking test.

The IET Speaking test is divided into the following parts:
1) Introduction: A warm up question to help get comfortable
2) Study Abroad Question: here we ask about motivations for studying abroad and about school/university life
3) Picture: We will show two pictures and ask you to describe, discuss and compare what is happening in the pictures.
4) In Depth: Here we will ask questions about your family, relationships, background, and challenges or goals in life and go into more depth about that topic.

Instructions for the IET Speaking Test:

Please download Zoom on your laptop or desktop computer and use a webcam (mobile or ipad will not be accepted).

Please ensure that you have a fast internet connection of at least 600kbps (up/down) and recommended is 1.5 Mbps (up/down).  It is important that you have a good internet connection to ensure the test is smooth. You can check your internet connection speed here: http://fast.com/

Please bring your passport copy and show it on screen at the start so we can do ID verification.

Please check the background and make sure that it is clear. Please take the interview in a quiet room. There should be nobody else in the room during the test, and no background noise.

How to Prepare for the IET Speaking Test

It is a good idea to practice general conversation with some friends or your English teacher on the days before your test. The English test is designed to evaluate your English level in a classroom and social environment. It is a good idea that you practice general conversation and develop the ability to go deeper into expressing your thoughts and feelings and be able to debate more complex ideas.

Some Tips:

Remember that there are no right or wrong answers. The objective of the test is to evaluate you oral English level.

Please try to speak as much as possible. It makes it easier for the examiner to evaluate your level. If you don’t fully develop your answer then it is harder to evaluate your English level. Don’t be concerned about speaking too much. If necessary, the Examiner will interrupt you to move onto another question.

We recommend Lingbe app for practicing your oral English. Lingbe is an app that connects you to English speakers and other English learners to practice English conversations.

We also have the following English training packages to help you prepare for the IET test and to prepare you for studying in an English classroom environment. Please contact us for more information.

Hi, you can read more details about the IET here.
The IET is generally cheaper than IELTS, and is faster to book and receive scores than IELTS. It is a fully online test, so it can be taken from anywhere in the world regardless of Covid restrictions. It is officially recognized by Chinese universities and has been used by many of our students to successfully apply.
