Tongji University MBBS Admissions Guide For 2024

Tongji University School of Medicine offers one of the best English-medium MBBS programs in China. This six-year program is taught by tenured international professors and students can intern at any of Tongji’s eight modern affiliate hospitals. The program has an affordable tuition fee at ¥45,000 RMB per year.

What are the entry requirements to the MBBS program?

  • Applicants should be between 18-25 years old (no later than Dec. 31st of that year, Dec. 31st included)
  • High school graduate or above
  • Non-Chinese citizen with non-criminal record
  • In good health
  • Good command of English (IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL IBT 85 or above). Applicants who are native English-speakers or have studied in English-taught high schools are not required to submit English proficiency certificates.
  • If the applicant is under the age of 18 before 31st August of the application year, the guardian is required to provide supplementary materials.

Important Notes: 

The No.12 Document of 2020 issued by the Ministry of Education, PRC is administered by the University. Two important items of the Document are to note.

First, according to Article 5 of Nationality Law of The People’s Republic of China, ‘a person whose parents are both Chinese nationals and have both settled abroad, or one of whose parents is a Chinese national and has settled abroad, and who has acquired foreign nationality at birth shall not have Chinese nationality.’

Since 2021, those applying to study at universities or junior colleges as international students, should satisfy the following additional requirements: the applicants must hold valid foreign passport or other relevant international recognized documents for at least 4 years; meanwhile, in the latest 4 years (by each April 30th of the year of University registration), the applicants must live overseas for 2 years (Living overseas for 9 months can be converted to 1 year, which is subject to the exit-entry stamp on visa.).

Second, those who immigrated to other countries from the Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan and apply to study as international students at universities or junior colleges of China are required to satisfy the requirement of the first item.

How much time do students spend on clinical internship in the MBBS program?

Basic Medicine course include anatomy, physiological and pathological experiments and etc.
For Clinic Medicine, students follow this arrangement every year:

  • In the summer of the first and second academic years, the school will arrange students to
    go to the hospital for a two-week “early exposure to clinical practice”.
  • In the third and fourth year, students will visit clinical settings for bed-side observation and basic practice in clinical courses.
  • In the fourth year, students will have comprehensive simulation practice in our Clinical Training Center.
  • In the fifth year, students will have one-year compulsory internship.
  • In the sixth year, students will have another one-year strengthened internship.

How does the MBBS in China compare to MBBS in other countries?

An MBBS in China is different in three ways. First, students are exposed to a wide range of cases and we provide more practical opportunities. Second, we have traditional Chinese medicine in our curriculum. Third, we have relatively lower tuition and cost of living compared to western countries.

What can students do after studying MBBS in China?

First, they need to take the Medical Licensing Exam and pursue residency training. Our school is listed in World Directory of Medical Schools and our MBBS Degree meets the requirements of qualification verification for Medical Licensing Exam in most countries.

Second, students can do continuing studies, such as a master’s or doctorate degree. Third, they can find a job after graduation.

What are the opportunities for MBBS graduates in China?

MBBS graduates can apply for a job in a wide range of health-related fields in China. They can apply in hospitals, start their private practice, work in research facilities and more. They can also find a management job in many Sino-foreign joint venture hospitals.

How is clinical internship arranged in China? 

All internships will be arranged in our affiliated hospitals, which are high-quality comprehensive hospitals (Grade A, tertiary level according to Chinese hospital rating system). The final location will be determined through two-way selection between students and hospitals.

The compulsory internship includes Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatric, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatric, Imaging, ECG, Emergency, and Infectious Diseases. The strengthened internship is flexible. Students can choose up to 4 fields to practice.

Can students do their internship abroad or in their home country?

Students are not allowed to go back to their own countries for internship unless they comply to the short-term clinical exchange programs organized by the university. This is the unified regulation from the Ministry of Education on all MBBS programs in China.
