SUMC has two campuses: the original medical campus in the historic center of Shantou city, and the modern campus shared with the main campus of Shantou University in the northeastern suburbs.

For the first few years, students spend their time at the main university campus carrying specialized training and research. The main campus is strategically located at the heart of Shantou with extensive facilities. Both campuses have a huge land area; regular, free shuttle buses are readily available for students.

One of the most recent additions to SUMC’s state-of-the-art facilities is the new SUMC teaching facility. It is located on the main campus and has been put to use by students.

The new Medical Education Center was designed by Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd. It is home to modern-equipped classrooms, research laboratories, and computing rooms. Cutting-edge facilities including Simulated Medical Center and Human Life Science Hall are also found in the new facilities.

The Medical Education Center took first place in the International category in the biennial Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2016/2017. It is the first structure from China to receive the award.

Student Life at Shantou University Medical College

SUMC encourages students to form their own organizations and to participate in various campus activities and community services, providing facilities, equipment, and financial supports.

The student organizations consist of the Student Union, an autonomous organization responsible for defending students’ interests and providing a variety of services to their fellow students, and over 30 student associations and clubs. They are active in organizing various extra-curricular activities for their fellow students, which makes our campus life more vigorous and energetic.

SUMC sees the value of engaging students in cultural activities, thus sponsoring The Campus Art and Culture Festival and The English Science and Technology Festival every year. The Campus Art and Culture Festival consists of competitions (dancing, singing, event hosting, calligraphy, painting, photography, dorm interior design, and skits), concerts, and talent shows.

SUMC encourages students to participate in various field medical practice activities and volunteer medical services. The three charity programs, i.e. The National Hospice Program, Medical Aid for the Poor Program and Rainbow Project, initiated and supported by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, have gained a wide appreciation in local communities.

Participation in community service provides students with an opportunity to apply academic learning to real human needs and to enhance their social awareness and understanding of medical ethics.
