Introduction to the Program

The Master’s in China Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a three or four year program for international students taught in English.

About XJTLU

Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a new international university jointly founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University China and the University of Liverpool UK as a joint venture. As an independent Sino-Foreign cooperative university, it captures the essence of both prestigious parent universities and is the first and only one of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education in China. The University offers undergraduate degree programmes in the fields of science, engineering and management, and awards both its own Chinese degree and a degree from the University of Liverpool.

About the Program

With the rise of China as a global economic power, there is an increasing demand among organizations anMaster’s in Cd companies from around the world, working with and in China, for professionals with knowledge of China’s political, economic and social systems and who can also speak Chinese. The Master of China Studies provides those in the programme with in-depth knowledge of China’s history, politics, society, and economy, in order to equip them with a more comprehensive understanding of China’s complex socio-economic system. This knowledge will provide graduates of the programme with unique and important insights, as well as language training, critical to operating and decision-making in the Chinese context in any field.

About The Department of China Studies

The Department of China Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University teaches and researches China’s history and culture, society and politics, business and economics. It has academic programmes that are open to both Chinese and international students – teaching is in English and no prior knowledge is required. The department also has an active outreach educational programme for staff at XJTLU and in the wider community.

Companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies working in diverse fields (technology, health, media, culture, and society) dealing with China or operating in China are demanding graduates with a comprehensive understanding of China’s past and present society, economy and politics. Knowledge and Skills

Upon graduating, students will acquire a comprehensive knowledge of China’s history, culture, society, politics, and economy, as well as of China’s regional, technological, and social policy development. Students will also learn or improve their Chinese language skills.

Upper second class (2:1) honours

China

  • 1st tier universities: 75 percent or above
  • 2nd tier universities: 80 percent or above

Note: Chinese applicants are not required to take the MoE postgraduate entrance exam.

Academic Background

An undergraduate degree (UK 2:1 or equivalent) in any discipline.

English language requirements

If English is not your native language or if you have not studied in English at degree level, you will need to provide evidence of your English proficiency. You should normally possess one of the following qualifications:

  • IELTS: 7.0 in all sections
  • TOEFL iBT: 100

In exceptional circumstances, individual cases will be considered on their own merits. You may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate your English proficiency.

If you miss the English language requirements by 0.5-1.0 of an IELTS band or a similar number for other English language exams, you can be admitted to the programme after successful completion of our five- or eight-week intensive English presessional course.

You can also apply to take the XJTLU English language test in lieu of an IELTS/TOEFL or equivalent. Based on the score, students may be admitted or may be required to take and successfully complete the five- or eight-week intensive English presessional course.

Additionally, students may be required to complete English language courses on a pass/fail basis as part of the additional learning activity requirement during their studies at XJTLU.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees are RMB60,000 per year. The total for the 18-month program is 90000 RMB.

Tuition Fee: GBP 12,000 – 16,000 (approximately)

Accommodation

The accommodation facilities are located within the Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation District, where the University is situated. All accommodation within this area is private and managed by the Suzhou Industrial Park Education Development & Investment Limited Company (SIPEDI), and also provides to students studying at other institutions.
