Over the past two decades, entrepreneurship and innovation activities in China have grown at an exponential rate. They have become the leading agenda of China’s national development strategy and a major driving force behind China’s transition towards a knowledge-based economy and a central hub of global innovation. Successful Chinese entrepreneurial companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, and Xiaomi are bringing forth disruptive changes not only to China but increasingly also to the rest of the world.

From 19:00 to 20:30 Beijing time on October 14, Prof. JIA Ning, Associate Professor of Accounting at Tsinghua SEM, will deliver the online lecture Venture Capital and China’s Capital Markets that will offer an opportunity to discuss the investment in entrepreneurial companies in China and the role of capital markets in fostering innovation activities.

About The Speaker

Prof. JIA Ning

Associate Professor of Accounting, School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University

Professor Jia Ning is an Associate Professor of Accounting, Director of the Center for Globalization of Chinese Enterprises, and Associate Director of the China Business Case Center at Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management.

Professor Jia’s research focuses on the role of accounting information in capital markets, venture capital/private equity, public offerings, and the growth and valuation of entrepreneurial companies. Her research papers have been published in the European Accounting Review, California Management Review, Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies, Journal of Chinese Entrepreneurship, Economic Perspectives, China Accounting Review, among others. She is the winner of the 2010 California Management Review best paper award (the Accenture Award), 2010 International Conference on Asian-Pacific Financial Markets best paper award, and 2013 CFA Institute Research Award. She is a leader of two World Economic Forum projects “Entrepreneurial Eco-Systems Around The Globe and Company Growth Dynamics” and “Global Entrepreneurship and the Successful Growth Strategies of Early-Stage Companies”, respectively, and several research projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Professor Jia has written more than thirty English cases on management practices of Chinese and Non-Chinese companies across a wide spectrum of sectors. Those cases, including eBay, Check Point, Baidu, Focus Media, China Machine Press, Shanghai Xinhua Hospital, Xinxing Ductile Pipe Co., BeyondSoft, are distributed through Harvard Business School Publishing and ECCH.

Professor Jia’s teaching includes Empirical Accounting Seminar (doctoral course), Financial Management, and Financial Statement Analysis. She also teaches on numerous executive education programs including Tsinghua-HEC-Goldman Sachs Women Entrepreneurship Track Program (executive education), HBS-Tsinghua Private Equity and Venture Capital in China Program (executive education), and Stanford Business School Executive Program for Growing Companies (executive education), among others. Professor Jia has also given invited presentations/presentations to executive education program participants from Tulane University, Stanford University, Chicago University, Loyola University, Fordham University, HEC, WHU, ESAN, LIMAK, LASAK, Vlerick Leuven Gent, HKUST, among others. She is the winner of the 2011 Tsinghua SEM Executive Education Program Outstanding Teaching Award and 2010 Tsinghua University Best Teaching Award.

Professor Jia is a member of the Ministry of Finance of China National Accounting Leaders Program and an active member of China’s financial media. She is the guest host of CCTV News’s weekend program  <New Money> and a guest of <World Insight>. She also serves on the board of directors of several companies.

Professor Jia holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Science (Cum Laude) from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree in Statistics from Stanford University, and a doctorate in Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
