Happy International Women’s Day!

March 8th is celebrated as International Women’s Day, or what we called 妇女节 fù nǚ jié in Chinese. In 1949, coinciding with the founding of modern China, Women’s Day became an official public holiday to celebrate women’s skills and achievements.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’ve selected three Chinese phrases that celebrate women.

妇女能顶半边天

fù nǚ néng dǐng bàn biān tiān

Meaning: women can lift half the sky. This Chinese phrase, first uttered by Mao Zedong and one of his most famous phrases, wants to tell us that women can do everything that men can do.

yī xiào qiān jīn

Meaning: A smile of a thousand pieces of gold. The smile of a beautiful woman is worth a thousand pieces of gold.

 

不爱红装爱武装

bù ài hóngzhuāng ài wǔzhuāng

Meaning: Prefer the armor to the dress. This phrase was also first uttered by Mao Zedong in a poem he wrote for the female soldier in the army. This phrase is an expression of his appreciation towards the brave and strong women.
