Interview > Foreign Students at University of Science & Technology, Beijing

Why did you choose USTB?

Boy: Yeah, because I wanted to learn Chinese. I hope I can talk to some people in Chinese. I wanted to know that language.

Boy: So I hoped the school can prepare me for this. So — I didn’t expect that it would be that difficult. Because I think that it’s quite a lot of learning, but uh — we’ll see. We’ll see.

What do you think about life in — life in Beijing?

Boy: Beijing? Well, I’m from a small city, so this is really — this is really a huge city, and uh, yeah, everything’s so rushed. Many people. Yeah, it’s interesting.

How about you? What do you think about life in Beijing?

Girl: Um. Well I’m here for doing my PhD, so I have to learn some language, some. So life in Beijing is good. Even I’m Muslim, I get no problem here or anything. It’s good for me, it’s good. All them respect you, and respect me, and it’s good.

How would you describe your time in China in one word?

Boy: Busy!

Girl: busy, all the time we have class. To the morning, and to the night. From the morning to the night.

Boy: Yeah, I think we don’t have a lot of time to enjoy our time here, except during weekend. Most of time we are learning. If we want to study well, we have to learn hard, so it’s quite busy.

What would you like to tell other students about USTB?

Boy: I think the school take care about us very well. We have some activity days. We can enjoy some performances, or we visited Great Wall. So that’s fine. I think the surrounding here is very nice. And I like it.

One of the main advantages of USTB Chinese Language program is that the classes are mixed with students from different languages. It means that students need to speak together in Chinese, rather than their native language.
