Have you ever wondered what Normal University means?
A normal university is a university created to train teachers. Its purpose is to establish teaching standards or norms, hence its name. Most such schools are now called teachers’ colleges.
Founded in 1954, a key university in Shanghai, Shanghai Normal University is a comprehensive university with salient features of teacher training and particular strength in liberal arts.
With over 40,000 students, SHNU has 18 colleges with 85 undergraduate disciplines related to 11 subjects covering philosophy, literature, pedagogy, history, law, economics, management theory, mathematics, engineering, agriculture and so on. SHNU has 154 Master’s degree programs, 42 doctoral degree programs and 7 post-doctoral research centers.

One of the earliest universities to provide Chinese language programs to international students in Shanghai, SHNU started to accept international students in 1965. SHNU is one of the authorized universities to accept international students sponsored by Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Scholarship, Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship and so on.
International College of Chinese Studies (ICCS) is the particular college to provide Chinese language programs to international students in SHNU.
ICCS holds clubs for international students such as Calligraphy, painting, photography, erhu (a traditional musical instrument in China), martial arts, yoga, dancing, learning to cook Chinese food, etc. Also holds other extracurricular activities, like Chinese corner, Chinese speech contest, Chinese culture competition, talent competition, international culture week, sports games, New Year’s party, etc.
