PhD at the School of Computer Science
Introduction to the Program
The PhD Programme at the School of Computer Science at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) is a a three to four-year postgraduate degree program taught in English.
The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was the first Sino-foreign university to open its doors in China. Established in 2004, with the full approval of the Chinese Ministry of Education, we are run by The University of Nottingham with cooperation from Zhejiang Wanli Education Group, a key player in the education sector in China.
The University of Nottingham is in the top one percent of more than 7,500 higher education institutions worldwide and league tables consistently rank the University highly. For more info visit the page here.
About the Program
The School of Computer Science offers PhD and MPhil research degrees. Both should be viewed as preparation for careers in research and development.
Big Data and Visual Analytics Lab
The Big Data and Visual Analytics Lab focuses on acquiring, processing and visualising datasets that are important to the understanding of various disciplines within science and engineering, and the arts and humanities.
Computational Intelligence in Optimisation
The Computational Intelligence in Optimisation group is concerned with developing mathematical models and intelligent methods and systems for complex real-world optimisation problems in the era of big data.
Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science
This group focuses on the development and analysis of the theoretical foundations of computer science, which include, but are not restricted to, subjects such as computability and complexity in analysis, semantics of programming languages (domain theory, category theory), type theory and functional programming.
Software Implementation, Testing and Evolution
Formally established in 2014, the Software Implementation, Testing and Evolution group looks at all aspects of the software lifecycle, including requirements engineering, design, implementation, testing and maintenance.
Visual Information Processing Laboratory
The Visual Information Processing Laboratory develops computer vision and image processing technologies to solve practical problems, to improve productivity and to enhance everyday life.
Applicants for PhD should ideally have a first class degree but need at least an upper second class degree (2:1) or equivalent.
Those whose first language is not English are asked to fulfil the following English language requirements:
