Introduction to the Program

The Master’s in Urban Design (Part Time) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a two and a half year part-time program for international students taught in English.

About XJTLU

Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a new international university jointly founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University China and the University of Liverpool UK as a joint venture. As an independent Sino-Foreign cooperative university, it captures the essence of both prestigious parent universities and is the first and only one of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education in China. The University offers undergraduate degree programmes in the fields of science, engineering and management, and awards both its own Chinese degree and a degree from the University of Liverpool.

About the Program

The MSc Urban Design programme allows you to engage in the complex issues of urban space production in the dynamic Chinese context. It considers the interplay between spatial design and social, economic, environmental and political issues evident in a range of urban settings. It is taught across the Departments of Architecture and Urban Planning and Design to ensure that you receive an interdisciplinary perspective on the development of urban form.

The programme is not limited to those with architecture or urban planning backgrounds, rather it is relevant for all interested in understanding the nature and production of spaces. Staff teaching on the programme offer varied perspectives both in terms of disciplinary approaches and spatial understanding.

Graduates of this programme, as with all XJTLU masters degrees, earn a University of Liverpool degree that is recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

About The Department of Urban Planning and Design

The Department of Urban Planning and Design at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is unique and dynamic. Initially built on the foundation of the University of Liverpool’s Civic Design department, home of the oldest urban planning programme in the world (established in 1908), the Department of Urban Planning and Design at XJTLU has grown into a truly international department that marries the best of urban planning and design theory and practices from around the world to the specificities of practice in rapidly urbanising China.

The department’s connections to others within XJTLU, and unusual strength in urban design, help to foster the interdisciplinary inquiry essential to good urban planning and design.

Our international and interdisciplinary mix of academic staff, and their wide range of professional and academic experience, makes for a lively intellectual atmosphere that nourishes staff and students alike.

Careers

Urban design plays an important role in the environmental, social and cultural factors that influence society and is crucial to building sustainable urban systems.

Graduates of this programme can expect to pursue careers as urban or regional planners in public and private sector companies, developing plans for the use of land, helping to create communities, accommodate population growth, and regenerate facilities in urban areas.

China’s fast-paced development means that opportunities for graduates with urban design knowledge will be plentiful.
