Bachelor’s in Applied English

Introduction to the Program

The Bachelor’s in Applied English at Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a three or four year program for international students taught in English.

About XJTLU

Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a new international university jointly founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University China and the University of Liverpool UK as a joint venture. As an independent Sino-Foreign cooperative university, it captures the essence of both prestigious parent universities and is the first and only one of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education in China. The University offers undergraduate degree programmes in the fields of science, engineering and management, and awards both its own Chinese degree and a degree from the University of Liverpool.

About the Program

The BA Applied English programme is for those interested in studying English as a subject matter in its own right. Students in the programme will become knowledgeable of the many ways in which English, and more broadly, languages are used around the world today. Subjects are offered in the areas of linguistics, literature and translation studies. Aside from being a plaftorm for the development of intellectual faculties, the programme provides ample opportunity for students to engage in the application of their learning. This is done, for instance, through the practice of translation and interpreting.

Applied English students will acquire a range of skills transferrable not only to work such as language teaching, translation and interpreting, and editing, but also many settings requiring the ability to identify and deal with real-world problems in an innovative manner.

About The Department of English, Culture and Communication

The Department of English, Culture and Communication is a research-led department that prepares graduates for careers as English-language professionals in the fields of media and communications, finance, and international business.

Our graduates have skills that are highly sought-after in domestic and international job markets, and the innovative interdisciplinary design of each of our programmes ensures that students are well-prepared for the range of opportunities and challenges they will meet in their future careers.

Careers

The demand for people able to identify and solve problems in a creative yet holistic manner is clear. To do so requires not only the ability to speak English as a language, but also to know how it works and to be able to use it well. The increasing internationalisation of China’s economy, culture and society requires young professionals to possess both a practical and theoretical understanding of English.
