About the Program

This degree is one of the first UK English language programmes in China. It aims to equip students with the highest English communicative and critical skills, combined with a thorough understanding of western linguistic theory and applied analyses. It also helps the students develop their own communicative ability in English – oral and written – at the highest level for international interactions, whether academic or professional.  In addition to standard theories of language, this degree provides students with a sophisticated understanding of how language is used in context and influenced by purpose, setting and audience.

The first two years are shared with the sister degree, BA in English Language and Literature.

Course Structure

Year One (Preliminary year – Ningbo) N.B. This year is not compulsory for students with appropriate qualifications for year two entry.

The preliminary year comprises a special programme of English for Academic Purposes designed by staff from the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) at the University of Nottingham. This is carefully integrated with the content programmes offered by the School so as to prepare students fully for years 2-4 of the degree.

Year Two (Qualifying Year – Ningbo)

Students are introduced to standard theories of language and explore various contexts of language in use. They are also introduced to modern literature and develop advanced language skills.
