Speakers

Dr. Lan Li

Assistant Professor
School of Engineering

Professor Li obtained a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Delaware in 2016. Since then she has been a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Professor Li joined Westlake University in 2019 as an Assistant Professor and is the PI of the Flexible Integrated Photonics Lab (FLIP Lab).

Dr. Li has pioneered a monolithic approach to realize flexible, high-index-contrast glass photonics with significantly improved processing throughput and yield. She also demonstrated flexible photonic devices with record optical performance and extreme mechanical robustness, which can sustain over thousands of bending or stretching cycles by adopting the developed mechanics theory accounting for multiple neutral axes. This theory can accurately predict the strain-optical coupling behavior within the laminated structures. She further proved that the developed technology can also offer a facile fabrication route for heterogeneous integration with active components as well as 3-D photonic devices such as vertically coupled micro-resonators, adiabatic inter-layer waveguide couplers and photonic crystal.

Dr. Yaochu Jin

Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence
School of Engineering

Professor Jin obtained his BSc. (1988), MSc. (1991) and PhD degrees (1996) in Automatic Control from the Electrical Engineering Department at Zhejiang University. He is currently Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the School of Engineering at Westlake University. Before joining Westlake University, from 2021 to 2023 he was an Alexander von Humboldt Professor for Artificial Intelligence at Bielefeld University in Germany. From 2010 to 2021 he was the Surrey Distinguished Chair Professor in Computational Intelligence at the University of Surrey in Guildford, U.K. And from 2015 to 2017 Professor Jin was a “Finland Distinguished Professor” at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland and a “Changjiang Distinguished Visiting Professor” at the Northeastern University in China. He is a member of Academia Europaea and Fellow of IEEE.

Prof Jin’s research interests include trustworthy artificial intelligence and artificial general intelligence. He has been working in the cross-disciplinary areas of computational intelligence, computational neuroscience and computational systems biology, such as evolutionary optimization and learning, secure and privacy-preserving machine learning and optimization, graph neural network based combinatorial optimization, pretrained generative models for optimization, spiking neural networks and neural plasticity, computational modeling of neural and morphological development, morphogenetic self-organizing swarm robots and reconfigurable modular robots, artificial life, and evolutionary developmental systems. He has published over 500 papers in IEEE Transactions and major conferences such as CVPR, NeurIPS, ICLR, and ACM MM. His research output has been applied to design optimization of many industrial systems, such as turbine engines, high-lift airfoils, vehicles, and aircraft fuselage, reverse engineering of biological gene regulatory networks, vaccine selection, healthcare, fintech and robotics. His research has been funded by EU FP7, UK EPSRC, UK Royal Society, German BMBF, NSF China, and several companies including Honda, Bosch, Airbus, Huawei and Nvidia.
