About the Program

The Master’s Program in Contemporary Development of China(CDC) aims to contextualize and analyze the processes that have shaped underdevelopment in developing countries, specifically in China, and the many responses to them. Conducted by Beijing Normal University (BNU)’s School of Social Development and Public Policy (SSDPP), the program seeks to locate the policy framework of social development firmly within evidence-based theories and practices, and adopts a grounded and multi-disciplinary approachto issues of social development such as social welfare, poverty reduction, migration, gender, public health, civil society, etc., for students interested in pursuing a career in government bodies, development agencies, research institutions, and non-governmental organizations.

The program is taught in English by top Chinese and international scholars and practitioners in relevant fields, and its curriculum combines lectures and seminars with field visits and internships. At the end of the program, students are expected to have a deeper understanding of China’s development processes and their implications, and should have gained critical skills in analyzing development policy and undertaking development research.

School of Social Development and Public Policy

The School of Social Development and Public Policy (SSDPP) was originally founded in 1999 as a research institute and officially became a school in September 2008. SSDPP is an interdisciplinary institution that integrates 35 faculty members from a variety of academic backgrounds, including sociology, economics, political science, anthropology, education, psychology, management, geography, statistics, medicine, public health, and history. The focus of SSDPP’s teaching and research is on social policy, social welfare, civil society development, public health, risk management and governance. SSDPP’s research outputs have been published in top international and Chinese journals and its empiricallybased policy advice has regularly shaped state policies and plans.

  • A recognized bachelor’s degree;
  • Since the program is offered in English, a good mastery of English is required for program admission. Foreign students with English as a second language are suggested to verify their English proficiency with relative certificates.

Curriculum

The Master’s in Contemporary Development of China is a 2-year program spanning four semesters of study.Courses begin in September and continue through July in each academic year.

Students are expected to complete 32 academic credits, including 30 credits of course work and a 2 credit thesis proposal, as well as write a final MA thesis.

The tuition fees are RMB49000 per year. The total for the 2 year program is 98,000 RMB.
