Introduction to Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU)
Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU) is a university in Hangzhou, China. It was founded in 1956 as the second public university in Zhejiang Province. It was formerly named Hangzhou Institute of Electrical Engineering and was renamed in 2004. Located in the historical and cultural city of Hangzhou, China, Hangzhou Dianzi University is an institution of higher learning that offers multiple disciplines, including engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law and education.
About the Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU)
The predecessor of the university is Hangzhou Aviation Finance and Economics School which was founded in 1956. In 1980, ratified by the State Council, Hangzhou Institute of Electronic Engineering was set up, which was later renamed Hangzhou Dianzi University in 2004. Throughout decades the university was successively affiliated to the No.4 Ministry of Mechanical Industry, the Ministry of Electronics Industry and later the Ministry of Information Industry. The university has been under ministerial and provincial joint leadership with the Provincial Government playing the major role in management since 2000. So far, HDU has developed into a teaching and research-oriented university with the great support from the authorities of Zhejiang Province for further development. The university has a current enrollment of more than 26,000 full-time undergraduates and postgraduates and a staff of 2,200.
The university is composed of several schools, including School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Automation, School of Finance & Economics, School of Management, School of Computer Science, School of Software, School of Electronics & Information, School of Communication Engineering, School of Sciences, School of Foreign Languages, School of Humanities & Arts, School of Publishing and Press Industry, School of Continuing Education, The National Demonstrative Vocational School of Software Technology, and School of Information Engineering (Independent School) which is affiliated to the university. The university has 45 undergraduate specialties, which fall into 7 major disciplines, namely, engineering, management, economics, science, literature, law, and education.
In 2003, with approval from the Ministry of Education, the university launched its doctoral program and set up one post-doctoral research station and one joint-doctoral station with Zhejiang University, also HDU has 2 Joint Doctoral Programs with Dublin City University, Ireland and Queen’s University, Belfast, UK; 3 disciplines are qualified to Doctor’s (Ph.D.) Degrees, another 6 specialties like Software Engineering are key disciplines of Zhejiang Province. Furthermore, 6 primary disciplines and 31 secondary disciplines are qualified to confer Master’s Degrees. Meanwhile, the university is also authorized to grant Master’s Degrees to on-the-job candidates and confer Master of Engineering (ME) in 9 academic fields. Moreover, there are 2 key-in-key provincial disciplines, 7 provincial key disciplines, 7 ministerial key disciplines in the university.
About Hangzhou
Hangzhou, reputed as “Paradise on Earth” for centuries in China, is one of the country’s most renowned and prosperous cities. It is well known for its remarkable economic growth and social progress with reputable efforts in sustainable development in the past several decades as well as the rich cultural heritage as possessed by an ancient capital of China and the breathtaking natural beauty as represented by the world-famous West Lake.
In the year of 2007, the Hangzhou Municipal Government launched a campaign calling on its citizens to make joint efforts to develop the city into one of “Quality Living”, which encompasses the quality improvement in all aspects of people’s life, including economic development, travel resources, health and well-being, social stability, employment, household income, government efficiency, educational qualification, environmental protection and infrastructure. As a result, the City has been listed at the top of the few “Happiest Cities in China” for five consecutive years, in addition to the awards of “UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor” from the United Nations and the title of “International Garden City”, it won in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
Hangzhou is the home of the annual “West Lake International Expo” and the 1st and 2nd “World Leisure EXPO”.
West Lake in Hangzhou
The West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, comprises the West Lake and the hills surrounding its three sides, covering a total area of 59 sq. km. It has inspired famous poets, scholars, and artists since the 9th century with numerous temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens and ornamental trees, as well as causeways and artificial islands.
Scholarships
Hangzhou Dianzi University Scholarship Scholarship for International Students is established by Hangzhou Dianzi University aiming to attract and encourage excellent international students to study at Hangzhou Dianzi University. The HDU scholarship only opens to the students who study the degree programs.
Categories of Scholarship
Scholarship A – the undergraduate students who won this scholarship don’t have to pay the tuitions and will receive 1,400RMB per month.
Scholarship B – the postgraduate students who won this scholarship don’t have to pay the tuitions and will receive 1,600RMB per month.
Scholarship C – the undergraduate students who won this scholarship only have to pay half of the tuitions and will receive 700RMB per month.
Scholarship D – the postgraduate students who won this scholarship only have to pay half of the tuitions and will receive 800RMB per month.
Campuses
Hangzhou Dianzi University has four campuses:
Wenyi Campus
The campus was built in 1956, the year when HDU was founded. It sees HDU growing up from Hangzhou Aviation Finance and Economics School to a leading university in electronics and information technologies national wide. It is located downtown, which is only a 20 min walk to the picturesque west lake. This is where the foreign teachers live, and the commute to the other campuses.
Xiasha Campus
Located in the Xiasha Higher Education Park, which is about 15.5 miles away from the Wenyi campus, Xiasha campus is the main one of HDU. It is a modern campus that contains 11 colleges and over 22,000 undergraduate students and postgraduate students. Major facilities include a 12-floor library, 10 key laboratories of the provincial and national level, 12 teaching buildings and 1 students activity center, sports fields, a stadium, cafeterias, provide an excellent environment for teaching, researching, studying and entertaining.
Dongyue Campus
This campus locates in the west part of the city, which is about 6.2 miles away from the Wenyi campus. The College of Information Engineering, a separate run college affiliated to HDU, stands on this campus. The college aims to train practical intelligent who have the strong basic knowledge, creative and practical ability, and competence in order to contribute to the provincial, economical construction and social development. Most students are from Zhejiang province. The college provides an English program and an International trade program, which may occasionally require foreign teachers.
Xiasha East Campus
A newly opened campus, located in the Xiasha Higher Education park as well, but much smaller than the main campus. It provides teaching and studying facilities for students from the College of Software Engineering
Life at the University
Hangzhou Dianzi University Library was founded in 1956, under the name of Hangzhou Wireless Industry School Library. Following the changes of the University’s name, it Changed to Hangzhou Institute of Electronic and Engineering Library, and in 2004, it gained its present name. The old building of HDU Library located in Wenyi campus has an area of 6,400 square meters and the new building located in Xiasha campus has an area of 28,000 Square meters.
Hangzhou Dianzi University Library’s collection is emphasized on Science and Technology and also covers broad subjects of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management. The total collections of HDU Library amount to 2.46 million volumes, including 1460,000 printed books, 1000,000 e-books, 30,00 Hangzhou Dianzi University theses, more than 2,500 current serials and 50 titles of online databases.
The Library provides traditional and innovative services to users by various technological means. From publications and databases selection, acquisition and cataloging, online reference service, to a database search, operation of electronic resources, Subject Librarian and experienced staff members are committed to meeting the needs of the academic community of the University. All the Library Resources are open to readers. There are professional staffs that maintain the Library website and update the data regularly. In order to strengthen the connection between reader and library, and to solve the problems that readers met in using a library in time, there is also professional staff to reply the readers’ messages at guestbook or BBS.
The Library has Departments of Administrative Office, Acquisition, and Cataloging, Readers Services, Reference Services, Information Technology Services. The Library staffs consist of 66 members:7 with Senior Professional title, 40 with an Intermediate title and 19 with the primary title. And there are 8 of the Library staff having a master’s degree, 21 bachelor’s degree and 22 Associate degree.
