Bachelor's in Applied Mathematics XJTLU

Bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics

Introduction to the Program

The Bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics at Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a three or four year program for international students taught in English.

About XJTLU

Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a new international university jointly founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University China and the University of Liverpool UK as a joint venture. As an independent Sino-Foreign cooperative university, it captures the essence of both prestigious parent universities and is the first and only one of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education in China. The University offers undergraduate degree programmes in the fields of science, engineering and management, and awards both its own Chinese degree and a degree from the University of Liverpool.

About the Program

Mathematics underpins much of the modern world and is fundamental to science, technology and the world of business and finance. In the BSc Applied Mathematics programme you will study a core of fundamental mathematical topics and be introduced to a varied range of applications.

By studying mathematics you will develop strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities and an appreciation of the importance of logical reasoning. You will also learn how mathematical modelling can be used to help analyse real-world problems. These skills are essential in many domains and are highly sought after by employers.

About The Department of Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is committed to excellence in research and teaching, and mathematical and computational sciences are among the major research strengths of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

This is a lively and friendly department for undergraduate, postgraduate and research students and has a reputation for student achievement and success. Our academic staff are internationally recognised for their high-quality research output in a number of areas of modern mathematics.

The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, which are open to both science and arts applicants (through the Mainland China admissions system) and international applicants.

Careers

An applied mathematics degree opens up a wide range of career paths. Graduates are highly sought-after in the job market and are employed as analysts, modellers, statisticians and managers in industries such as finance, information technology, biotechnology, consultancy and government.

Many of our students choose to continue their studies at postgraduate level. Popular choices of masters programme include applied mathematics, pure mathematics, financial mathematics, industrial mathematics, mathematical modelling, financial engineering and statistics. An increasing number of graduates are enrolled for further studies at renowned universities abroad such as the University of Warwick and Imperial College London.

Knowledge and Skills

By the time you graduate from BSc Applied Mathematics, you will:

  • Have a secure understanding of core areas of mathematics: analysis, linear algebra, differential equations and statistics
  • Be able to reason clearly and critically, and construct mathematical arguments
  • Know how to analyse a mathematical problem and select appropriate mathematical tools to solve it
  • Be able to construct and assess mathematical models for real-world problems
  • Have the ability to communicate mathematical information, ideas, problems and solutions in English to both specialist and non-specialist audiences
